Inside Out

I love to walk here with my sister (she has permission to be on the property).  Because of the "tweekers" who come to pillage wire and other salvageable items from the buildings, it is best never to walk here alone. 

Standing inside The Abandoned on an upstairs balcony, looking over what once was a cafeteria, it is eery to view light fixtures hanging from the inside, with no barrier to the world outside.  Great windows once stood here, until vandals smashed them to pieces.

I found a huddle of bright fabric puddled against cement and broken glass.  The curtains once covered those huge windows.

The last time I visited there, Sissy and I found this gigantic pile of debris.  Shockingly, the graffiti covered walls and empty rooms are gone.  The Abandoned is being systematically stripped to its bones. 

It is a good thing this wonderful building has such fabulous bone structure!

I am so happy to see the owners of this property are finally cleaning and maintaining this amazing complex of buildings.  I will post more photos as the clean up progresses.

Here, along with the blackberry bushes, the pink smoke tree overtakes the graceful spiral of stairway making it all but impossible to navigate.  Yet, somehow it is lovely.

Further on, one can stand upon a small hill to look back upon the gaunt ruins of The Abandoned.

The English ivy has overtaken much of the grounds, covering trees, walk ways and even climbing above to the sky walk overhead.

Though often invaded by those who wish to do the place harm, there can be a timeless sense of peace about the place.

Spiral

This is one of the curling staircases of The Abandoned.  At the top of these graceful stairs is the sky walk.

The lines of this building are lovely.  This staircase is only one example of the beauty still to be found in this unusual place.

The Gruesome and The Gorgeous

One can find all sorts of exotic flowerings along the overgrown roads and paths of The Abandoned. These blossoms were especially beautiful.

Further on Sissy and I discovered this red smoke tree overtaking this graceful twirl of stone stairs.

The tree seemed almost nonchalant, as it rested on it's elbows, to peek over the railing.

The back of this enormous building seemed foreboding...

Once inside Sissy and I discovered the magnificent fireplace had been stained with what looked like blood.  There seemed to be a heavy darkness in the air.  Why would someone do this?

Back outside in the sunny parking lot, we both felt released from the darkness we had found in the bowels of The Abandoned.

The innocence of a flock of small birds were a delight to the eye and food for the soul. 

I stood for a moment, wondering.  Is there hope for The Abandoned?  One can only dream about such things.
