The Great Fire Pit

I have been gone from this blog for quite some time.  The area where this grand old fireplace once stood is filled with fancy houses, sidewalks and street lamps.

I know it is progress and what's happening now is a good thing.  However, I still feel nostalgic for the mystery of The Abandoned.  Sometimes, when I look across the street at all the new houses--I wonder if the past doesn't sometimes waver into the present.

Demolition Has Begun

As of a few weeks ago, the big machinery was moved in.  The walls of The Abandoned are being torn down and soon it will be leveled as though it had never been.  Memories will continue, but the buildings will be gone.  One of the owners told Sissy and I that there are plans to put in over 400 brand new homes in this area.

But the forests of our childhood will remain.  The old growth trees will continue to flourish, maiden hair fern will grow in the canyon next to the creek, wild animals will thrive and Sissy and I will still be able to walk the paths where we played as children.

WARNING:  Because of the current on-going demolition, The Abandoned is especially dangerous at this time.   Those who come here without permission risk arrest for trespassing..

Grim and Gruesome

In the basement of The Abandoned is this strikingly beautiful fireplace.  One wonders what the symbol gracing the chimney might signify.

Last Hallow's Eve, someone sprayed fake vampire blood all over this stunning structure.  Grim and Gruesome--gruesomely perfect for the holiday, grimly hoping those who vandalized this will be caught.

Sky Bridge

This is on the Sky Bridge which stretches between the main building and a smaller one.  I took this picture at the far end, looking back toward the main big building at what used to be huge glass double doors.  As you can see, nature is having her way with this place, if someone does not intervene, it will soon be totally overrun with ivy and blackberry brambles.

At the far end and to the left of the Sky Bridge is a HUGE fireplace.  It was once a beautiful work of art, but vandals have taken the bricks, using them to break windows in The Abandoned.

It is a wonderful, fascinating, mesmerizing place, beautiful despite the destruction wrought by vandals and neglect.
